Today at R & L, it is our absolute pleasure to introduce you to a new class of leading women. Say hello to Shenali Sema – a creative genius, an artist and now an entrepreneur.
Born in Nagaland, graduate in Textile Design from National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad, and having studied fashion from the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (CSM) in London – she is every bit an artist. She now lives in Noida.
Her work has been featured in Vogue, Elle, Grazia, Harpers in India and has been featured globally in Surface Asia Magazine and Business of Fashion – as one of the rising talents in Asia. She was also written about by Susanna Lau of Style Bubble – one of the most influential fashion blogs in the world. She was also the creative director of the fashion house – Morphe India, before starting her new venture UNTITLED Co.
Light, airy, architectural, neat, chic and very personal , Shenali’s designs come off as a unique piece each time – which is the soul of her new design company UNTITLED Co.
At Untitled Co. we want every piece of work we design to be seen as pieces of art, a work-in-progress, not adhering to any particular movements or trends. Our ethos firmly based on design research, appreciation of skill and informed interpretation of material & technique. Our mission is to produce quality art items through skill identification and rigorous attention to quality check.
On how she became a Designer
Shenali gives due credit to her roots as she says “Hailing from a region in India known for its aesthetic sense, rich craft and textile heritage, I developed an innate sense of design. The education I received at the National Institute of Design and Central Saint Martins College of Art (CSM) further developed my perception of design.”
“At CSM, the way design is approached and taught is very organic and every kind of interpretations and notions are embraced. All research works are concept based with equal focus on the process and the end product – celebrating and encouraging individual identity. Being in London got me to experience and appreciate design in a completely different environment on an international platform, which I believe played a very important role in my growth as a designer. My association with Morphe, as Creative Director began in 2012 until September last year when I decided to start out on my own.”
On growing her business, 5 years to the future
She has her eyes set on big dreams “In 5 years time I would like to see our unique model of business grow and expand into a factory space perhaps and spearhead many more stimulating projects and be a part of a much bigger conversation on craftsmanship, design and crafts in India, especially in the North- Eastern part of India.”
You can check out her work on Instagram [ they are mind blowing!] and you can also get in touch with her at work.untitledco@gmail.com
We can clearly see that this woman is not just a talented artist but a trailblazer – who plans to revolutionize the way the masses see and buy fashion – as true pieces of art. Here is to beautiful women with a lot of substance. Sending our love and best wishes to Shenali.
