This 20 year old comic artist from Kolkata is an exception, who not only grew up reading but learned the trade of creating one in her own imaginary world with animal characters being her favourite. Her Instagram is filled with quirky and fun comic strips that will definitely not leave you disappointed .

R & L had a quick chat with this talented young comic artist who turns day-to-day activities or real life situation into humour by doodling them into characters.

  • Tell us something about yourself and what are you up to ?

I’m Shreya Kundu, 20 years old who is currently based in Kolkata. Well, I am currently  up to expressing my ideas in silly comics!

  • Introduce us to your work. What got you started?

I’m a comic artist, and I make funny short stories from time to time.

“I’ve been a fan of humour as long as I can remember, so a couple of years back I decided to store my ideas in form of comics/stories, so that I don’t forget them.”

  • What initially sparked your interest in this field?

What initially sparked my interest was the fact that so much can be expressed in a comic of a few panels!

  • What do you do full-time? If part time, how do you manage to indulge in your hobby?

I’m an undergraduate student right now. So, I have to split my time proportionally between exams, classes and my comics.

  • What’s your creative/Work philosophy – where do you take inspiration from?

I take my inspiration from nature, like everyone else does. Mostly cats, dogs, ants, earthworms and their actions/daily activities .

  • What do you hope people take away from your doodles?

I hope my comics make you a little happier!

  • Can you single out a favourite character you created from your work which you are particularly proud of?

I have a character of a mouse in my comics, named Popi. Besides the mouse, I also have characters of a tortoise and a dog, which I’m really proud of.

  • Tell us about your latest work and how it inspired you .

My latest comic is about a dog. A person is asking everyone there if anyone wants the leftovers, the dog waves yes, but the person fails to notice the dog – the dog is hurt as a result, and frustratingly suggests if it has to pee on the floor to be noticed there.

  • On an average , how long does it take for you to curate a comic?

The idea formation time can be anything from a minute to a month. But the drawing process generally takes around 90 minutes or so.

  • Your comics are interestingly very real world struggles/ situations based. How do you come up with the concept?

” I see a certain feature around, I try to make a joke on it, and it becomes a concept in my comics.”
