A Chat With A Designer Cake Artist of Culinart – Shwethaprajwala from Bangalore

They say, “If you have creativity in you and haven’t realized it yet, no matter wherever you are, whatever you are doing, creativity is bound to hit you.”

Being a Commerce student and an MBA in Human Resources, she found her calling for baking cakes with utmost creativity and love after experimenting on being a Graphic Designer. Today, we got a chance to strike up a conversation with a Designer Cake Artist Shwethaprajwala from Bangalore who shares on how she got hooked onto baking fondant cakes with her Designer Cake Boutique – Culinart.

  • Hey Shwetha, share a brief about yourself

I’m Swethaprajwala, the Chief Designer of Culinart. Like most modern Indian women wear many hats, I’m a proud Bengalurean, a Homemaker and a Cake Artist working out of home.

  • Tell us about your venture – Culinart. What’s so special about it?

Culinart is a Designer Cake Boutique, started in 2012, specializing in creating designer cakes. Our cakes are usually ordered for special ceremonies, occasions for family, friends and significant others.  My creations are homemade, customized, and based on the requirements. Culinart believes in enhancing memories.

“I use only quality ingredients, and every element starting from understanding the client, their budget, going to the drawing board, sourcing only seasonal fresh fruits for essence and single-handedly creating and baking it every time.”

  • What is the concept / theme. What was the inspiration behind it?

Design and art came easily and naturally to me. After trying my hand as a Graphic Designer, I knew art was my true calling – the Oils on Canvas, the Creation of Murals, and the Do-It-Yourself Craft, name it and I loved it.

I discovered my love for baking when I starting looking for quality, chemical-free cakes for my daughter’s 4th birthday.  Disappointed with the outcome, I ventured into experimenting at home. Over the months, I taught myself to bake simple cakes to celebrate birthdays of my daughter, nieces and nephews.

“With every creation I tried, I was more motivated to try the next challenging aspect of baking. I’m proud to have baked last 6 birthday cakes for my daughter. And today, I bake a minimum of three designer cakes every week.”

  • Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur or a baker?

Entrepreneurship always motivated me, and that was one of the reasons I chose Commerce as a stream. I was enthused to make conversations with people and hence, chose Human Resources as my specialization in MBA. After I became a mother, I realized that my strength and satisfaction was in creating ART.  Baking happened by chance, and I am happy to have given it a shot.

  • How has your roots encouraged you to do what you are doing today?

I come from a family of Journalists and Engineers. My childhood years were way diverse and I got a lot of exposure and encouragement from my father who is a renowned Journalist in Bangalore. It was my mother, an excellent cook, who taught me to pay attention to detail.  If you look at my creations, the detail is the ‘hero’. I go all super motivated when I create the fondant finish figurines; thematic designs using fondant or floral base frosting for the cakes.

“The only key for excelling in design is to pay attention to detail.  And I’m thankful for my family to have passed it on to me.”

  • What do you guys serve? What’s the most special thing on your menu?

Culinart specializes in Fondant Designer Cakes, Hand-sculpted Figurines, and Realistic Sugar Flowers along with the usual butter cream, Ganache Fresh Cream Cakes. We also have Double Chocolate Truffle Cakes, Macaroons, French Entremets, Classic Brownies and Cookies. And we provide Dessert Table to suit the theme of the party also.

“One of my creations to celebrate the homecoming of Ms. Sushruti Krishna, the former Femina Miss India Runner Up 2015 is one of my esteemed creations along with a few cakes like the Castle, 3-tier White Cakes with Floral Designs are my personal favorites.”

  • Have you faced any challenges in this? How did you manage them?

Getting quality ingredients was one of the major difficulties when I started baking. Over the last three years, this has eased out evidently. We pay premium price for sourcing organic and natural ingredients.  Non-availability of packing material is another hurdle as it gets little tacky when I try to deliver in Bangalore’s changing climatic conditions. With no adequate controlled temperature, delivery mechanism and city’s traffic doesn’t make it any easy.

  • Any special mention about your products, Shwetha?

The customized cakes that I made on demand using all natural and seasonal fruits with no jams or jellies for embellishment.

  • Where can we reach out to you?
