In Conversation with the Creative Founders of Fashion Brand ‘House of Psy’

‘House of Psy’ is a fashion brand that was launched in the year 2015. We recently got a chance to have a chat with the founders, and learn more about their venture. House of Psy deals in bags, accessories and art where every product is handcrafted, ensuring quality and detail attention. They have online stores as well as walk-in-stores at several places across the country like – Mumbai, Assam and Nagaland. Let’s read to find out more!

  • Hello! Please introduce a little about yourself.

We are the creators of Psy – designer Anisha Chanda is from Guwahati and Danish, the Head of Production is from Mumbai. We have been busy crafting designs and looking for new inspiration every day since the start of Psy, in early 2015.

  • Tell us more about your venture, “House of Psy” and its specialty.

House of Psy is an anti-sweatshop fashion brand. It goes without saying that we value and care about the people who work relentlessly behind the brand’s success because we believe that every individual deserves the right to dignity. And its outcome can be seen in each product that is meticulously and beautifully handcrafted from start to finish.

  • What is the story behind the name and the brand concept?

The word ‘Psy’ comes from psychedelic art. Psychedelic art is a way of looking at life from a perception that life is not just black, white and grey. It comes in varied shades, sizes and patterns. We wanted to celebrate the richness and finesse of our culture–values, pride and self-reliance through our brand. Thus, with this concept, the brand under the name ‘Psy’ was started.

  • How did you guys come up with the idea and what was the inspiration behind it?

Anisha: Growing up with Maa and Aita (granny), two of the most important women in my life who are, to me, fashion icons of the 1960s – an era well known for its psychedelic fashion – I developed a keen interest in psychedelic art and fashion designing. They are my inspiration!

  • How have your roots influenced your working style?

Northeast-India is all about resilience, tolerance, self-reliance and diversity. It has taught us how to be self-reliant and to be able to celebrate diversity. And as a brand, it has a huge influence in the way we perceive fashion, colors, culture, languages, history, art, and way of living.

  • Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Becoming an entrepreneur was not a dream as a teenager. I come from a family of doctors and academicians. So, I prepared myself to become an academician or a doctor because pursuing something beyond that was unimaginable. As for my co-founder Danish, he had always looked up to his uncle who worked in an advertising production house. He knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur from a young age.

  • What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and lessons you’ve learnt so far?

As young entrepreneurs, the challenges are countless, from designing to marketing and sourcing the right print to customers at the right time. No challenge is big or small. It is incomparable. The brand has grown mostly because of the challenges we have faced. We are always trying to improve by paying careful attention to criticisms and feedback. Every day is a part of the learning process for us.

  • Please share some details about the products that you sell. Where can we buy them?

We are into bags, accessories and art for now. Our plan is to eventually have more entrepreneur brands under ‘House of Psy’. Also, we have plans to promote artisans around Northeast-India via collaborations.
