  •  Menule: Hi, please tell us about yourself!

Rose: Hi, my name is Rose and I’m 23 years old. I am the owner of ‘Greige Rose Chocolates’ which I started back in June of 2020. I had just quit my job as an air hostess in 2020 (during the pandemic lockdown), and I kept thinking that I had to do something. That’s when I finally went ahead with a lifelong dream to start my own venture. And here I am.. running Greige Rose Chocolatesfrom my home in Kohima! 🙂

  • Menule: How would your friends describe you?

Rose: Emphatic and hardworking (as I was told by most of my close friends) 🙂

  • Menule: I have to say that your chocolates look magnificent! Tell me more about ‘Greige Rose Chocolates’ – and how it all started?

Rose: ‘Greige Rose Chocolates’ is a personal venture I started in June of 2020 – a brand of homemade chocolates that come in a variety of flavors and designs. I also take customized chocolate orders where customers can customize chocolates of their choice.

“2020 was a roller coaster ride for all of us due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When there was a nationwide lockdown in the month of March 2020, I came back home, leaving my job as an air hostess.

It was not easy to leave my job and at that moment, and I kept thinking that I had to do something. After many deliberations, I decided to start something of my own – a homemade chocolate business. I named it ‘Greige Rose Chocolates.’ I finally launched it in June of 2020, and it’s been around nine months since then.”

  • Menule: That’s truly inspiring! It must not have been an easy task to start something under such circumstances. What has been that driving force motivating you all along?

Rose: I have always looked up to many strong and independent people in my life, and these are the people who have inspired me over the years.

“The beautiful thing about looking up to such strong people is that each of them teaches me something different, something valuable that I can apply in my own life. Their authenticity and determination encourage me. Almost all of them have taught me to stay true to myself and to never allow failures to bring me down.”

  • Menule: I am still scrolling through your offerings, and they are all so unique and flawless! I’m sure there is so much that goes behind the scenes. How many hours do you spend on ‘Greige rose chocolates’ in a day?

Rose: Greige is managed single-handedly by me so my work calls for a lot of time and energy. From making my chocolates to putting up the logos, the boxes, and shipping the orders etc. demands a lot.

“Obviously, my daily hours vary based on the number of orders. But creating new designs for my chocolates takes a lot more time. I would say I spend around 2-3 hours making orders on a daily basis; for bulk orders, it can take up to 8-9 hours or even a whole day too.”

  • Menule: What motivates you to keep going?

Rose: I’ve always dreamed of running my own business, a startup, or a brand. Now that I have officially started Greige, I’m more than motivated to keep it running towards the future.

“I aspire to inspire especially young people like me, through my work and this keeps me going no matter how complicated or how difficult it may become at times. I believe that my passion and work can inspire people and that pushes me to work harder.”

  • Menule: How do you decide on the taste and the designs/themes of the chocolates?

Rose: I usually begin by planning out the designs that I’d like to try out in my chocolates. Then I get into my apron and try my hands on random designs and chocolate mixes. Sometimes, an unplanned design turns out to be a best-selling one!

For the taste of my chocolates, I decide on it depending on the combination of the ingredients and toppings. Occasionally, I bring out the color-themed chocolates and for occasions like Christmas and Valentine’s Day, etc..I make chocolates incorporating elements of the same.

  • Menule: What is the most satisfying part about making your own chocolates?

Rose: Making my chocolates is always so fun. I love being in the kitchen, with my apron on, ready to create something I enjoy and love doing. There is beauty in creating something with my own imagination and creativity. It brings me joy and contentment when I bring out new ideas and themes for my chocolates.

  • Menule: What do you find the most challenging in making chocolates?

Rose: Umm, making the chocolate designs can be a challenge sometimes, however, for the most challenging part, I’d say setting the temperature right for tempering the chocolates.

“It’s very important to temper the chocolates at the right temperature to get that rich and glossy finish. If the temperature is not set correctly, we don’t get the desired end result which can be quite disappointing – frustrating even, especially when I’ve got a huge number of pending orders.”

  • Menule: How has been the response so far?

Rose: I am truly overwhelmed by the positive response to my homemade chocolates. It’s wonderful to see people supporting and encouraging this small venture of mine.

The customers’ reviews really push me to work harder. The willingness of the locals to opt for my chocolates for special occasions and to treat themselves is something I really appreciate, and so encouraging… It pushes me even more to pursue this passion of mine...

  • Menule: Tell us about your latest work/project.

Rose: I added one new chocolate to my Greige chocolate collection which is my Chocolate Truffles and I should say I am really happy with it. This is my first premium Greige chocolates and the texture and everything turned out exactly the way I wanted it to be.

  • Menule: During your ‘me time’ what type of music do you listen to relaxing?

Rose: I listen to all genres of music. If a particular song strikes me in a particular mood, then I usually play it on repeat. My playlist is a mix of soft pop to country to lo-fi and the list goes on.

  • Menule: I always look forward to seeing new exciting items/designs on ‘Greige Rose Chocolates.’ So wrapping up this interview, do you want to share your goals for 2021?

Rose: In 2021, my main goal is my chocolates! 🙂 I aim to build a strong foundation for my business whilst expanding and promoting it further. I have plans to upgrade my chocolates and I have a couple of new chocolate designs and flavors in my mind which I’ll put up pretty soon. 🙂

Thank you for giving me this platform to share my story. It was indeed an immense pleasure to talk about my journey with Greige.
