NorthEast Fashion Report from The Streets of Shillong – by Arepla Jamir

For those who are familiar with the vibrant energy of Shillong, a big part of its charm comes from the young folks that flock its streets. And almost unmissable is the fashion landscape of the town, represented mainly by the student crowd gathered from across the North East of India – which is undeniably the country’s hotspot for all the movers and shakers in Fashion.

Our contributor Arepla Jamir from Nagaland, currently a student in Shillong herself, introduces us to some of her fashionable friends to give us a sense of what’s trending in the local fashion scene in Shillong.

Trendspotting can be a tough job in today’s world because fashion trends are constantly changing; and with individual style gaining popularity, tracing a trend in a particular place is not so simple. So the best way to gauge the local fashion scene is to walk down the streets – especially here in Shillong, which can give you a pretty good view of what’s trending – all in one place” ~ Arep, Student, Shillong

Hakani Sungoh, 21, Political Science Student is all about comfort. After all, fashion cannot survive on the streets if there is no comfort. Hakani loves mixing her looks with comfortable high necks, sweatpants and white sneakers for everyday style.

Kihitoli Chophi, 21, a Sociology student, has made herself quite recognizable in the fashion world of Nagaland, Shillong and beyond, because of her understated sense of style and an amazing talent in embroidering. “I always plan each season what I would love to wear or kind of keep it all planned. Since it’s summer and it’s bright, I want to bring out the feeling of freshness through lively florals in my clothes to compliment the season” ~ Kihi from Nagaland

The retro floral trend is here to stay and florals can never go out of style. Our next stylish trendsetter says floral can be minimal, comfortable and always a safe choice. Lukter Lombi perfecting the floral wear look by matching it up with a pair of glasses and a fanny bag.

Sushita,19, Fashion Student. An army kid and all the way from Nepal now studying in Shillong, fashion has become her daily cup of tea. Currently rocking her favorite trends from the 80’s, her style, she says, is inspired by our forever beloved Archies comic characters like Betty and Veronica. “ Fashion revolves around and comes back. It’s never the same though, each time it comes back, it’s unique and beautiful in it’s own way. Fashion all over from the 80’s are in trend right now.” She further says “most of the present trend has been inspired by vintage comics like Betty and Veronica. Lee Middleton, Student, Makeup Artist and Fashion Stylist Lee is loves spicing up his outfit mainly comprising of basic items, with some bold pieces like a metallic jacket, a pair of tinted glasses or colorful striped pants.
