  • Tell us about your venture, “The Rolling Pin Bakery”. What’s the story behind the name?

The Rolling Pin Bakery is our quaint little shop and bakery situated in Ukhrul, a town in Manipur. It is a joint venture by my husband and I. Both of us share a lot of common interests and hobbies, this being one of them. Our bakery stocks a variety of baked products and we take orders for goodies for every special occasion. We also have a sitting area. And… an ice-cream vending machine is the newest addition!

  • What initially sparked your interest in baking? Take us through how it started for you?

It all started at an early age as cooking has always been my hobby. I always loved trying out new recipes and cooking those for my family. As time passed, I tried my hand at baking and I felt more at ease. So, by the time I completed my graduation, I was sure I wanted to pursue the art of baking.

  • What inspires you to bake everyday?

Every time we receive an order which is slightly challenging in terms of design, we get to learn new kinds of techniques and methods. This, in turn, inspires me and my team to work harder bake better every day.

  • How have your roots and upbringing influenced your style of working?

I have grown up watching my family members work hard to attain something good in their lives. So, I believe in the notion of the dignity of labor.

“We are a food-loving family. Respecting food comes into our natural instincts. I apply this philosophy that has been passed down from my roots into my baking. All our goodies are baked with care, hard work and an extra bit of love.”

  • What are some challenges you’ve faced in your journey so far? Also, what are some key learnings?

Presently, the biggest challenge we are facing is the frequent power cuts in our locality. Also, the availability of the raw materials round the clock is a primary concern. In these three years, I have learned a lot of new baking techniques. The ability to enter the kitchen and create something delicious as well as aesthetically pleasing has been the greatest lesson of my passion.

  • What has been the best compliment received so far?

One of our customers who is a mother was really happy with our work. It was a birthday cake for her daughter. Her message to us read, ”Thank you so much The Rolling Pin Bakery for the beautiful yummy cake. You guys never let me down. My daughter was overwhelmed. Thank you so much! We will come again soon.” It’s so lovely to get this feedback and I guess this is what we are always aiming for every time we get into the kitchen.
